Nancy Duarte has been Principal at Duarte Design since 1990. Her firm is in the heart of the Silicon Valley, and the client list is loaded with Fortune 500 companies. Her passion for business communications that are clear, meaningful and attractive has opened doors for her in a business world full of cluttered and complex visual communications.
In this conversation, Nancy discusses Duarte’s new Persuasive Presentations eCourse.
Geetesh: What motivated you to create the Persuasive Presentations eCourse? And what can a participant of this course expect to be his or her takeaway?
Nancy: The eLearning space needs imagination right now. Training is moving online at a rapid pace, but that doesn’t mean it’s effective. We originally started considering online training after several clients asked for it. Technology allows companies to collaborate globally, so it doesn’t always make sense to bring a facilitator onsite. We wanted to build something that ensured people would engage and be as effective as our instructor-led workshops.
So, I asked my team to create an online course like no other. I wanted it to rival an old-time radio show, and they surpassed my expectations with their creativity! Learners will gain a new perspective on their presentation and their audience. The Persuasive Presentations eCourse is based on my HBR Guide to Persuasive Presentations, so it covers everything from crafting the message, creating compelling visuals, and delivering your presentation in a way that will resonate with your audience.
Geetesh: Your name has a high brand value, and whatever you say inspires presenters worldwide. Tell us about your personal involvement in the Persuasive Presentations initiative.
Nancy: In addition to providing the content for the eCourse from my HBR book, I open each segment of the course with a video, and provide voice-overs throughout the segments. Aside from my on-screen involvement, I partnered with our Academy team from inception through go-live to ensure that the content was insightful, engaging, and immediately applicable.
I want Duarte to start to shift the expectations in the online learning space, just as we did with traditional presentations. It is filled with information and exercises that users could reference again and again.
We pushed until our eCourse was an award-winning product (literally, it won an award already) to give to our audience. I’m extremely proud of what we’ve created, and I truly believe that the Persuasive Presentations eCourse can help change the world.
