In this conversation, Joan discusses “Mad for the iPad” survey data that Brainshark is releasing today, from a survey of 1,320 iPad owners.
Geetesh: Tell us about the findings of your “Mad for the iPad” survey – have iPads really become so ubiquitous?
Joan: You know, it’s hard to believe that the iPad has been around for only two-and-a-half years. They really are ubiquitous now and incredibly entrenched in users’ personal and professional lives. Wherever you are — in the subway, on an elevator, waiting in an airport — it’s not uncommon to see folks using their iPads to stay connected and be productive. Our survey found that 92% of iPad owners use their device on vacation, 73% on a plane, 73% in a car and 47% at a client meeting. Some of the responses made us laugh — 1 in 3 (34%) say they use their iPad naked, 60% use it on the toilet and 1 in 4 (24%) say they’ve used it while walking… and bumped into someone!
The funny stats are no exception — they all really speak to the value the iPad is delivering and how it’s become an indelible part of our communications landscape. In fact, although 92% of iPad owners say their device currently supplements their laptop, more than half (51%) think the iPad will become their primary computing device within the next two years.
Benefits iPad users are seeing, as they use their device for work, are numerous. They say the iPad has made them:
- More productive – 64%
- More successful at their jobs – 1 in 3 – 32%
- Able to close a deal – 1 in 5 – 21%
- Able to impress clients – 30%
No wonder users are so reluctant to part with it — in fact, 1 in 5 (20%) would rather lose their wedding ring than their iPad!
Here are a few more stats that you and your readers may find interesting, eye-opening and, in some cases, amusing:
- Can’t bear to break it – 1 in 3 (32%) would find breaking their iPad more painful than getting a root canal.
- Leaving the laptop at home? – More than 1 in 3 (35%) bring just their iPad when on-the-road for business, and leave the laptop at home.
- A business travel essential – When on-the-go for business for a day, nearly half of iPad owners (48%) say they’d go without meals, 41% would skip drinking water, and more than 1 in 3 (35%) would forgo bathroom breaks, before they would travel without their iPad.
Geetesh: Your iPad survey throws light on the large number of people using iPads to deliver and view presentations – what role do apps like SlideShark play in this area?
Joan: You’re right – according to the survey results, 74% of iPad owners have viewed or delivered a presentation on their device. When you want to be agile while on-the-go, it’s certainly more convenient to whip out an iPad versus lugging around and booting up a laptop.
Our free SlideShark app makes properly viewing and delivering PowerPoints on the iPad a reality. Prior to our launch last fall, this just wasn’t possible, and was a major headache for millions of business users. Now they can view and deliver presentations with fonts, graphics, colors and animations intact – while also sharing and managing their content in the cloud. We’re glad to be making our users’ lives easier. In fact, 77% of respondents who viewed/delivered presentations on their iPad described having their animations function correctly as a critical capability.
