Rick Altman has been hired by hundreds of companies, listened to by tens of thousands of professionals, and read by millions of people, all of whom seek better results with their presentation content and delivery. He covers the whole of the industry, from message crafting, through presentation design, slide creation, software technique, and delivery. He is the host of the Presentation Summit, now in its 20th season as the most prominent learning event for the presentation community.
In this conversation, Rick talks about the upcoming Presentation Summit 2022, being held both virtually and on location in San Diego, CA, United States from October 9 to 12, 2022.

Geetesh: You’ve done it all with the Presentation Summit conferences: in-person, virtual, and hybrid, and it looks like the next season of the conference in San Diego is going to be hybrid. Tell us more about what you aim to deliver to conference patrons in 2022?
Rick: That’s right, there is no unringing that bell – we have discovered a whole new community of presentation professionals since our virtual conference in 2020. That is quite the Covid silver lining.
When things are not broken, we do not try to fix them. We will always strive to be the singular and most prominent learning and networking event for anyone who is earnestly involved with presentations. That will never change. With the hybrid format comes the additional challenge of engagement across two disparate audiences and that will probably remain a challenge to event planners for the next 20 years.
I think we did quite a good job keeping our virtual audience engaged this last year and we heard from many of them that they thought so too. But this is all so new, there will be many emerging technologies, evolving opportunities, and continuing challenges. Nothing like a global pandemic to help old dogs learn new tricks.
Geetesh: With a location like San Diego, many patrons will want to attend in person, but it’s going to be a mix of in-person and virtual attendees. Can you share a few thoughts that will help patrons arrive at a better decision about which format works best for them?
Rick: Yes, we are committed to holding both experiences at once, as opposed to a virtual conference a few weeks later. It is much more complicated and more expensive to stage a single hybrid event, but the thought of holding two separate events just doesn’t fly with me. Not only is it crucial that people know that they are watching live events, it is equally urgent that they experience the same event. We want to blend two audiences into one community. That’s really hard and we might fall short forever, but that is no reason not to keep trying.
No matter how earnestly we seek virtual engagement, there is just no substitute for face-to-face interaction, and anyone who is able to join us in person should do so, up to our attendance cap of 200. Even if we were holding the conference in Siberia that would be true; it goes triple for a destination like San Diego, where the October weather will be heavenly and the proximity to restaurants and nightlife will be phenomenal.
But it is critical to point out again that no matter which audience you belong to, you will be experiencing the exact same programming, all livestreamed from our ballrooms. With the exception of the famous Trivia Contest, we’ll hold separate after-hours events, but we want to create the feeling that everyone is on the same journey.
Geetesh: Also, can they register now and change between formats later?
Rick: As long as there are still seats available in person, one can always move from virtual to in person. Moving in the other direction is a bit more constrained as the event draws near, but earlier in the season is no problem.
