Lori Chollar is co-founder and CEO of TLC Creative Services, based in Southern California. Her multi-faceted design background includes traditional graphic and print design, apparel and tattoo design, and of course, an amazing range of presentation, template and multimedia design. Building from a formal degree in graphic design to a thriving freelance business, her company with husband Troy, TLC Creative Services, has grown into a successful corporate design studio. Lori is passionate about good design and good business. Some of her favorite pastimes include walking their dog Scout, critiquing billboards and collecting toys to clutter…uhm…decorate her desk.
In this conversation, Lori talks about the Presentation Summit, being held in San Antonio, TX this year from October 6 to 9, 2019.
Geetesh: You are doing one session this year at the Presentation Summit, Collaborating in Design. What, according to you, will be the major takeaway for participants attending your session?
Lori: I want people to walk away feeling hopeful, excited and pumped to get back to their collaborative work. So often in the design world and in the presentation world in particular, we don’t get to spend our day simply designing. Instead, we’re stuck working with a poor-quality template, or we’re struggling to get people to agree to our designer point-of-view, we’re fighting to meet a deadline, or we’re battling to get someone to approve something. In short…we spend much of our time collaborating!
I want people to have a much bigger picture as to who the players are, what their roles and needs are and how you can work in the best ways to address those roles and needs while meeting your own. To answer the question, I want people to walk away with a level-headed, open-minded approach to collaboration so that after all is said and done and the collaboration has ended, there is an amazing design, presentation, product, or whatever, that rocks the world!
Geetesh: Lori, you are talking about collaboration. What do you believe are the most important elements for good teamwork, especially in the field of presentation design?
Lori: Teamwork makes the dream work! Yeah, yeah, yeah…that sounds nice and rhymes and everything, but in reality, teamwork is really hard and takes straight-up work! We do not and cannot design in a lone-ranger, I-am-better-than-you-are, it’s-my-way-or-the-highway design world anymore!
Yes, there are roles and hierarchy in the collaboration process, but when we understand and respect those roles and then do an awesome job at our own role, we can produce amazing work. And with amazing work comes happy clients and happy clients do all sorts of happy things like paying their bills and referring us to other (future happy) clients!
