Richard Goring is a Director at BrightCarbon, the specialist presentation and eLearning agency. He has helped to write and create thousands of presentations, and coached hundreds of teams to present more effectively using visuals, diagrams, and animated sequences that explain and reinforce the key points.

In this conversation, Richard talks about his participation at the upcoming Presentation Summit 2021, being held on location in Clearwater Beach, FL, and virtually this year from September 26 to 29, 2021. is the official media partner for the Presentation Summit.

Richard, please tell us about your sessions at the upcoming Presentation Summit this September? What would be the takeaways from your From Clunky Text to Impeccable Images session?

Richard: The main thing is how to create slides that support visual storytelling. We all know that walls of text on slides simply don’t work, and after a year and a half of Zoom meetings where it’s really easy to switch off from a bad presentation, even the most skeptical are looking for more visual content. But the problem is often how to create it. Most presentations can’t get away with a pretty picture and inspirational quote on a slide. How does that help to convey nuanced sales messages or detailed processes, accounting reports, or technology stacks? So in this session, we’ll be looking at ways to develop slides that help you convey complex content in an elegant, visual way. And there will be plenty of hands-on PowerPoint demo to show how to create it all.

Geetesh: Can you tell us something about how your presenting approach or style might be influenced by the hybrid in-person and virtual environment of the Presentation Summit this year?

Richard: Honestly, of all the events that you could present at, the Presentation Summit has such a friendly and knowledgeable audience, so in this case, I’d really looking forward to being able to chat with people as we go through. It not only makes things feel cozier and welcoming, but you get more people contributing, and the attendees provide terrific additional perspectives and ideas – and remember many of the speakers attend all the sessions – so plenty of valuable things come up. And that reflects presentation development generally. Look at what happens through the year in the Presentation Guild forums and Slack channel, where there’s lots of sharing and collaboration going on to help refine presentation material. There are often several great ways to achieve something, so opening things up to support that kind of sharing is valuable for all. Plus it should mean that those folks who are remote will feel just as involved as those in the room.

Geetesh: Please tell us about BrightCarbon, what challenges you help your clients with, and anything that would help us explore more of your work?

Richard: BrightCarbon is a presentation and eLearning design agency. We design clear, compelling, and persuasive presentations and use our visual storytelling skills to create effective eLearning, and provide advanced PowerPoint, Google Slides, and presentation skills training.
