Geetesh: Mike, at this year’s Presentation Summit, you are doing the Presentations from Start to Finish crash course and two sessions: Victory with Vectors and Advanced Infographics. Can you share what according to you, will be the takeaways for the audience from the crash course and each session?

Mike: Thanks to the pandemic, presentations have become part of most project workflows. Most of us will be involved in presentation design during our careers. The quality of our presentations is indicative of the quality of the content, but we often lack the resources and skills to develop a professional deck. My crash course and sessions empower participants at all skill levels to do it themselves in far less time.

The Presentations from Start to Finish workshop gives attendees a rapid process to develop clear, compelling presentations. In this crash course, we combine an easy-to-use methodology with powerful tools to go from request to final delivery quickly. We develop content and slides in real-time to improve the attendee’s understanding, recollection, and adoption.

Victory with Vectors focuses on making (or acquiring) and manipulating vector elements. Unlike JPEGs, GIFs, and BMP images, vector graphics (SVGs, EMFs, and WMFs) are not composed of pixels. They are made from math—geometry, points, and lines. Vector graphics are amazing because they have low file sizes, are resolution independent, and infinitely editable. When designed well, they are beautiful and professional. What’s not to love about vector graphics? Knowing how to use and modify vector art helps you create designs that are easy to evolve.

The Advanced Infographics session shows participants how to turn words and ideas into infographics. We learn a process for conceptualization and how to make high-quality graphics using free and low-cost tools in PowerPoint. We learn to leverage the power of PowerPoint’s SmartArt to begin developing infographics. For example, PowerPoint has a built-in icon library to help.

After we learn how to make infographics with free tools, we take it to the next level with low-cost tools like The Noun Project and Build-a-Graphic to make infographics like this…

Geetesh: Where do you look when you need some inspiration for your next slide or even the next animation? Also, can you share some of your favorite resources?

Mike: Inspiration is all around me. I can be inspired by the colors, style, or messaging of an ad in any medium. An animated Disney movie inspired one of my designs. I often take pictures or do screen grabs of anything that moves me. Using Google, Bing, and YouTube, I search topics such as “latest design trends” or “cool slide design” and take note of what I read and see if it has merit for future reference. Also, I always find nice design ideas at reputable stock image sites like iStockPhoto.

I am very inspired by the amazing designers I work with at my design firm, 24 Hour Company, as well as other designers and design firms in our industry such as Nolan Haims, Julie Terberg, Jole Simmons, Synapsis Creative, 365 Labs, and BrightCarbon to name just a few.

I regularly facilitate sessions at and attend industry conferences like Presentation Summit, CreativePro Week, and the Training Magazine Network Conference. I am always excited to jump on my next project after learning and networking events.

Lastly, I regularly listen to industry podcasts such as The Presentation Podcast and The World of Presentations.

I encourage you to click on these links and find something new that inspires you.
