Sheila McGurin plans and manages the many seminars and conferences hosted by Rick Altman. Since 2003, Sheila has been the one behind the scenes making sure Presentation Summit attendees have the very best conference experience. From city and venue selection to Expo partner coordination to on-site liaison, Sheila makes sure the business of the Summit exceeds expectations and continues to evolve.

Sheila is an East Coast transplant, having earned a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and Computer Science from the University of Massachusetts and then moving to California to pursue an IT career. She retired from the tech world in 2001 to raise a family and now enjoys a saner work-life balance.

In this conversation, Sheila talks about the upcoming Presentation Summit 2022, being held on location in San Diego, CA, and virtually this year from October 9 to 12, 2022. is the official media partner for the Presentation Summit.

Geetesh: Sheila, you have been involved with the Presentation Summit for 20 years, planning the 4-day on-site experience, managing the full-day vendor Expo, and running conference Operations. I hear you are retiring and this is your final Summit.

Sheila: That’s all true, Geetesh. It’s been such a fulfilling experience working with Rick Altman and the Summit team. I will take away many fond memories and lifelong friendships. In May of 2022, I graduated from a two-year Emergency Management program and plan to spend time working in the field of disaster response and incident management going forward, but I hope to stay in touch with my extended Presentation Summit family and visit with those in the US and internationally when I’m able to travel.

Geetesh: We last spoke about the conference in 2017. What has changed since that interview and how has it impacted the Summit experience?

Sheila: So much has changed since Covid, especially in the conference and live-event space. The biggest change (by far) is the addition of a virtual component to the Presentation Summit. There is nothing quite as awesome as the in-person experience, but now attendees around the world also have the option to participate virtually. Rick Altman has gone above and beyond to make sure virtual attendance is an amazing experience. Sessions are live-streamed with the virtual audience able to ask questions, chat, and interact with both the presenter and the in-person audience. Sessions are also recorded and available for playback any time from one hour after through 6 months post-conference. MC John Chen hosts daily social events for the virtual audience and there are many ways within the Swapcard platform to participate, view our partners’ virtual Expo booths, and really feel like part of the event. Nothing is pre-recorded at the Summit and we value interaction and questions from everyone in attendance.

Geetesh: Sheila, in our 2017 interview you gave some valuable advice for new and returning attendees. Can you reiterate and update this information?

Sheila: Absolutely!

My best advice is to come with an open mind and be ready to invest yourself in this unique conference. If you can commit and immerse yourself in the experience, that time investment will pay off in spades. Our staff and partner companies are always available to answer questions and provide solutions to your presenting issues.

Bring problem slides with you and spend time in the Help Center, sponsored by the Presentation Guild. We’ve literally had feedback saying that if nothing else happened over the four-day conference, the entire trip was worthwhile just for the 15 minutes spent in the Help Center. Problems that had been plaguing an entire department for over a year were solved in that 15-minute span and that attendee went home a hero. The hands-on Help Center is such a valuable resource – advice and one-on-one consultation with one of several Microsoft MVPs – and it’s all part of your Summit registration, both virtual and in-person.

And, finally, introduce yourself to everyone! I’ve seen so many business relationships develop from conversations at our conference; creative collaborations, partnerships, contract and employment opportunities, and most importantly for our partnering companies – business growth and expansion of their customer base. It’s very satisfying to see the Presentation Summit lead the way and help to grow the level of professionalism within the presentation community.
