Geetesh: Julie, you are presenting two sessions this year at the Presentation Summit, in both in-person and virtual formats: The Makeover Mentor and Think Like a Designer. Can you tell prospective attendees what they can expect from these sessions, and what they can do to benefit the most from them?
Julie: During The Makeover Mentor session I’ll share examples of before slides along with the redesigned after slides. Patrons have the opportunity to submit slides for makeover, so send yours in early! During the session, I’ll share the design transformations and explain how and why I made those decisions. We’ll discuss suggestions for further improvements to the examples and share ideas that you can apply to your own presentation designs.
Details matter! Minor improvements have the potential to elevate a design from “acceptable” to “exceptional.” Think Like a Designer is filled with tips for addressing those details and improving your presentation design skills. We’ll look at a variety of slide samples, point out common design fails, and discover ways to fix them.
Geetesh: You work quite a bit with fonts including cloud fonts. What are your thoughts on the new Microsoft fonts such as Aptos?
Julie: Fonts are such an important part of a successful design. It’s a treat to finally have hundreds of fonts to work with in PowerPoint! In 2019, Microsoft introduced a cloud font service, where fonts that are used in a file are automatically downloaded and applied to text. When someone else views the file, any missing cloud fonts are downloaded for them as well. The file renders the same as it was authored, without embedding. The same is true when the file is opened with the PowerPoint mobile app or PowerPoint online. If you’re interested in learning more, see my article and guide: A Guide to Cloud Fonts in Microsoft 365.
Aptos was just introduced as the new default font family for the Microsoft Office suite, replacing the old standard Calibri. Aptos is a clean, sans serif font and I think it works wonderfully for presentations. There are 28 different styles in the Aptos font family, including serif versions that pair nicely with the sans serif faces. It’s a treat to have a professionally designed font as the default in Office. We’re going to be seeing a LOT of Aptos in the coming years.
