Frederik Dessau is Head of Design & Content at Omnidocs, a document company focused on brand management and productivity in Microsoft Office. Frederik has been working professionally with PowerPoint (from template to content) since 2005, implementing not only brands, but also sales processes and project management excellence. Frederik came to Omnidocs with a broad background from traditional communication, ad and design agencies. Today he is a leading resource in terms of corporate efficiency within Microsoft Office with a special force (and love) within the domains of PowerPoint. Form follows function is the mantra, but we go the extra mile to make sure the brand magic is kept safe in templates and documents.
In this conversation, Frederik talks about SkabelonDesign’s evolution to the new Omnidocs branding.
Geetesh: SkabelonDesign evolved into a new brand name, Omnidocs recently. Beyond the name, what does this change represent to the company and its clients?
Frederik: As you imply, Omnidocs is not just our new name. It’s our new brand and a new identity with an even sharper focus on what we do best and how we help clients with all sorts of interactions with documents throughout their company.
We’re still the same people, and the business is very much based on our strong culture and deep domain knowledge. This knowledge has been the foundation of the business since the very beginning. But we do so many different document-related things now, that we had outgrown our name.
To give a few examples of how we are more than a template company, I would highlight that we are a preferred partner to Templafy; we sell, configure and build Templafy solutions. In addition, we have solutions aimed at solving document accessibility issues with our solution called Accessibility Assistant. We are also helping our clients win back time on our document automation platform, DocuMotor. In fact, you could say that we are (almost) everything that interacts with documents. Our old name referred to a fraction of this, and we changed it to show our clients what we can do for them.
Geetesh: Your new motto is We make every workday work better. Tell us more about how this relates to everyday users creating consistent, branded content that’s accessible and productive?
Frederik: Not just our motto – our purpose even. And yes, this is not a purpose that promises to save the world, but to us, it means the world.
To explain, we believe that there is a challenge built into the way we work today. All employees are basically publishers – meaning, they are responsible for producing documents and presentations. This leads to workdays wrestling with documents (primarily) in Microsoft Office.
But who said that a college degree equals any competency within Microsoft Office, or even communication, design, legal compliance, and whatever else we put into our documents?
This leads to organizations becoming less productive, and frankly, we believe that has a direct impact on happiness for the individual. That is what we are here to fix. We truly want to make every workday work better, for the end-users and the entire organization.
We do have clients who employ document specialists. They are important to the everyday workflow, but way too many companies leave this to the individual.
When we are involved with a client, we advise on best practices. Often, we are involved in a long-term partnership and are introduced to someone in a part of the organization, who has an idea in terms of better processes involving documents, processes, or data usage.
We might analyze user needs and document relevance to determine what to produce and implement. Or we might involve our designers to create optimal user experiences while honoring corporate brand compliance. We have many services and solutions to help solve any document need, an organization might have.
