Lori Chollar is co-founder and CEO of TLC Creative Services Inc., a design studio focusing on presentations, and live and virtual events. Her multi-faceted design background includes traditional graphic and print design, apparel and tattoo design (the temporary kind!), and a full range of presentation, template, and multimedia design. Building from a formal degree in graphic design to a thriving freelance business, her company with husband Troy, has grown into a successful corporate design studio. Lori is passionate about good design and good business. Some of her favorite pastimes include critiquing letter spacing and punctuation on public signage, walking her dog Scout, and growing a veggie garden (anybody need some tomatoes?).

In this conversation, Lori talks about her participation at the upcoming Presentation Summit 2021, being held on location in Clearwater Beach, FL, and virtually this year from September 26 to 29, 2021.

Geetesh: Lori, you are facilitating a new evening session this year: Women in Business. Can you tell us about this session, who it’s geared towards and what the evening will be like?

Lori: Well, if you were wondering if men are allowed, I’m sorry to say they are not. It’s not because we don’t value their opinions and viewpoints, we most certainly do, but we want to create an environment where ladies are comfortable sharing and opening up. I promise this will not be a gossip session!

My hope is that each lady that attends will walk away with nuggets of information, encouragement and even the oomph to get out there and make changes in their business life for the better. And when I say lady, I’m talking about any woman who’s involved in the presentation industry – whether you’re a designer, copy writer, or presenter, whether you work for a big or small company, you own a company or you freelance, whether you’re just getting started or you’ve been in this industry for ages – there is so much we can learn from each other!

Our conversation will be free flowing, but I will come armed with some interesting articles and studies about things such as equal pay, women in leadership, and breaking barriers to name a few. In fact, I would like to encourage the ladies to bring their own topics to discuss. We’re here to help and encourage one another to grow. I anticipate it will be a fun and engaging hour and a half, so come join us!

(And afterwards, stick around for Nolan’s Business Round Table discussion that starts immediately following – it’s gonna be a great evening!)

Geetesh: You are also delivering a session entitled Better Photos = Better Presentations. What is this session about, and what according to you, will be the audience’s takeaways?

Lori: Better Photos = Better Presentations is all about taking a fresh look at how we use and design with photos in our presentations. With the help of my staff, we’ve pulled a bunch of real-world examples to give you a glimpse into how we use photos in (hopefully) new and intriguing ways.

In fact, we’re going road-tripping! We’ll stop and ponder those large metal dinosaurs you might see in California…and ponder how and why we choose images. We’ll open our trunk and pull out some yummy tips and tricks to snack on (like cropping, background removal, and adjusting color). As with every road trip, you’ve got to fit everything back into the car, so we’ll look at optimizing images to keep your deck size small and manageable. And if we’re lucky, we’ll find a picturesque rest area to answer questions and talk about where we can go next with photos.

This should be a fun session with a balanced mix of show and tell, though I suppose it’ll be tell and then show! My goal is that the audience will walk away with new ideas and some new techniques to try with their next presentation.

Geetesh: You are returning to a hybrid event this year after last year’s entirely virtual Presentation Summit. How excited are you to be returning to a hybrid event, and how will you balance between the in-person and virtual attendees?

Lori: I’m super excited to see people’s faces in real life, though seeing friends and colleagues on a computer screen is great too! The fact that we are going to blend an in-person audience with a virtual audience is awesome and offers patrons the flexibility to attend the conference taking into consideration their situation and comfort level. What matters most is that we’ll all be together and that’s the most important part!

As for balancing the two audiences…well, let’s be clear, it’s one audience. I’ll be making eye contact with our friends in the room but also with the camera, AND I’ll have help from our meeting host who will curate questions and help me keep track of the online chat and comments. This Presentation Summit especially will be an amazing team effort and we’ve got a great team, from Rick and his staff, the presenters and exhibitors, and especially the tech crew behind the scenes! Can’t wait to see and “see” you all in September!
