In this conversation, Cliff talks about his participation at the upcoming Presentation Summit 2022, being held on location in San Diego, CA, and virtually this year from October 9 to 12, 2022. is the official media partner for the Presentation Summit.

Geetesh: Cliff, you deliver the keynote session on Monday at the Presentation Summit this year. Can you share some curtain-raiser thoughts on your Visceral Storytelling session?

Cliff: Recently I was helping a lawyer create a high-stakes presentation for a jury trial, where he needed to persuade the jury about the seriousness of a traumatic brain injury. He was using a video clip of his medical expert witness, who had a teaching model of a brain in his hands as he explained the science of the injury. As I asked questions to clarify the brain anatomy, I had an “a-ha” moment when I realized that the teaching model was hard plastic, and that using it was sending the visceral message that the brain was durable and impact-resistant – when an actual brain is soft and delicate when it hits a hard surface. I went to Amazon and bought a $12 squishy “stress ball” brain and demonstrated against my hand what happens when a soft substance hits a hard surface – leaving the jury a dramatically more memorable message. This sort of “visceral storytelling” is more important than ever to make messages memorable, and to complement and magnify the messages we have to tell in all our presentations.

Geetesh: I remember meeting you in Tucson during the first PowerPoint Live summit that Rick Altman hosted. That event evolved over 20 years to become the Presentation Summit. Do you have any stories or memories from the various summits that Rick has hosted over these years?

Cliff: My best memories of the summits are of Rick’s consistent enthusiasm and joy when he hosts sessions and goes out of his way to create community – I always walk away smiling and glad I came.
