Ingrid Mengdehl
Ingrid Mengdehl is a Managing Design Consultant at BrightCarbon, a presentation and eLearning agency. Originally from an animation background, she stumbled into PowerPoint almost by accident and hasn’t looked back ever since. She’s passionate about good design, engaging animations, and thinks Morph is pretty amazing. When not making presentations, Ingrid can be found in the dark corners of a theatre, making sets and fixing things with gaffer tape, and even sometimes dabbling in projection mapping.

In this conversation, Ingrid talks about her participation at the upcoming Presentation Summit 2022, being held on location in San Diego, CA, and virtually this year from October 9 to 12, 2022. is the official media partner for the Presentation Summit.

Geetesh: You deliver The Art of Interaction session at this year’s Presentation Summit. Can you tell us more about your session, and what takeaways can the audience expect?

Ingrid: PowerPoint has a lot of really powerful interactive tools that frequently get overlooked. In fact, most people don’t necessarily know they’re there, as they’re not considered the most useful for what you’d call a “basic” deck. However, triggers, hyperlinks, actions, and so on can unlock a whole range of possibilities if you spend a little bit of time experimenting with them. And it’s not just about “making things cool”, but also making your content more engaging to your audience. By making it interactive, you involve them directly and they are likely to get more out of the experience. It’s particularly useful for training presentations, but you can also find uses for them at trade shows, or when putting together sales decks.

While a quick Google search will usually teach you everything you need to know about how to insert a hyperlink, there are some advanced techniques that are not the most obvious to pick up. During the session, we will mostly be looking at those. You’ll learn about hover effects, how to best guide your users through your presentation, how to leverage both normal and audio triggers to create some incredible results, and how to create a PowerPoint deck that’s both self-running and interactive (yes, it’s possible!).

Geetesh: Ingrid, can you share a PowerPoint feature that you use often, that’s not so obvious to many users?

Ingrid: Custom Slide Shows, I think, is one of the most underused – or unknown – features in PowerPoint. It lets you create very customized decks, by not only allowing you to pick and choose which slides to present but also the order in which they are presented. You can also duplicate slides as many times as you want, and perhaps more importantly, hyperlink those customs shows within your deck. I’ve used it mostly to do clever things with interactive decks, but it absolutely could be used for more usual cases. For example, we see a lot of large sales decks at BrightCarbon, where the users select from a portfolio of slides what would be the most pertinent to present to their target audience. By using Custom Shows, you could preset those specific decks, add a menu on the first slide, and very easily choose the one that would resonate the most with your current audience.

If you’re not sure where to find this magical feature, it’s under the Slide Show tab, and the dialog box is pretty intuitive!
