Geetesh: Julie, you are delivering two sessions at this year’s Presentation Summit: The Makeover Mentor, which is your series on makeovers with before-and-after example slides, and Type Essentials, that explores typography ideas specific to slide design. What takeaways can audiences expect from these sessions?
Julie: The Makeover Mentor session is driven by patron-submitted slides, so please submit yours early! During the session, I’ll explain the how and why of the before-and-after design transformations. Audiences will take away practical advice on editing content, slide composition, hierarchy, contrast, among other design principles, that they can use to redesign their own slides.
Understanding key principles of typography can help you craft better slides. In Type Essentials, you’ll learn why font choices matter and how to choose wisely. I’ll demonstrate ways to adjust sizes, styles, alignment, and spacing to boost the legibility and readability of your slide text.
Geetesh: Having been a frequent participant and speaker at the Presentation Summit, how do you feel about this year being the last conference? Also, what has the Presentation Summit held for you meant for you over the years?
Julie: It’s been such an honor and privilege to be a part of this conference! A big thank you to Rick Altman for the opportunity to present, learn, and grow along the way. Along with invaluable learning and networking opportunities, I’ve met so many dear friends throughout the years, including you, Geetesh. While I’m sad this is the last official conference, I know it won’t be the last time we gather to talk about presentations. This industry is continually changing and there’s always something new to learn and explore.
Geetesh: You recently created a white paper on using fonts in PowerPoint presentations. Can you share more about this paper, and how readers can get their hands on it?
Julie: Choosing Fonts for PowerPoint templates is available as a free download from my website. This a comprehensive resource that includes everything you need to know to select fonts that will work properly for PowerPoint file creation and viewing. Topics include: factors to consider when making decisions, font sources and pros and cons of each, font licensing, embedding, variable fonts, and so on. The paper is also available in French, thanks to fellow Microsoft MVP, Chantal Bossé.
