Matt Pierce

Matthew Pierce, Learning & Video Ambassador from TechSmith Corporation, has created videos for learning and marketing for over a decade. He is the lead behind TechSmith Academy and Camtasia Certification programs. Matthew has been a speaker at multiple learning and development focused and marketing conferences. He is a regular contributor to various training publications. Matthew has an MS in Instructional Systems Technology from Indiana University.

In this conversation, Matt talks about the Presentation Summit, being held in San Antonio, TX this year from October 6 to 9, 2019.

Geetesh: You are delivering a session at this year’s Presentation Summit, All About Video. Can you tell us more about this session, and what takeaways can attendees expect?

Matthew: Video is a communication medium that keeps growing and is an easy way to make sure your message is getting out there – whether in social media, on your website, or wherever else you want to be found. But video isn’t a skill that everyone is taught, and while related to presenting, there are some basic skills you gain and should be aware of. During my session we’ll take a look at some of the skills need to make videos, including looking at tips for turning presentations into good videos. We’ll take a look at what you need to do behind the camera, in front of the camera, and capturing screen video. Plus, I’ll provide resources where attendees can go to continue to learn.

Geetesh: What are your favorite tools for creating videos? And do you think presentations and videos are complementary or do you need to choose one of the two?

Matthew: I am inherently biased in my video creation tool, because I work for TechSmith, the company that makes Camtasia and Snagit. However, I teach that you should always use the right tool for the job you’re doing, which means I use other products like Adobe Premiere when needed.

I think videos and presentations have a lot that is complementary, and that many of the skills needed for presentation design apply to video design as well. Whether creating videos and presentations, you need to think about everything from what is or isn’t going to be showing, the colors used, the timing and pacing of your message, and the story that you’re weaving throughout.
