Rick Altman 2024

Rick Altman 2024

Rick Altman has been hired by hundreds of companies, listened to by tens of thousands of professionals, and read by millions of people, all of whom seek better results with their presentation content and delivery. He covers the whole industry, from message crafting, through presentation design, slide creation, software technique, and delivery.

In this conversation, he talks about the upcoming Virtual PowerPoint Workshop, Spring 2024 being held later this year for online attendees from April 16 to 17.

Geetesh: Rick, can you tell us more about your upcoming Virtual PowerPoint Workshop for Spring 2024.

Rick: This is my annual mid-year workshop, held six months away from the Presentation Summit. I used to journey to just a few cities in the U.S.; how nice that I can now offer this to people from all over the world and I don’t have to travel anywhere!

Geetesh: How is the workshop organized?

Rick: The curriculum is six hours: four one-hour seminars on Apr 16, and then what we like to call Office Hours on Apr 17. For two hours, our workshop patrons can bring any question, any slide, any dilemma, any anything.

Geetesh: What kinds of topics do you cover?

Rick: This workshop explores what I consider to be core skills and best practices for presentation. These are topics that I believe you can never learn enough times: what it means to think like a presentation designer, how to tell audience-centric stories, how to eliminate unnecessary words from your slides, how best to use motion, and how to make peace with your company’s template. We will also take a pretty deep dive into virtual presenting and the state of the art of virtual learning.

Geetesh: Who is the perfect fit to attend this virtual workshop?

Rick: This would be perfect for an organization or a department that has new hires, people transitioning into new roles, or just anyone in need of a refresher or a jumpstart. We typically get a dozen or so new users and we also get several repeat patrons who are well-versed in PowerPoint but just want to make sure they see and hear fundamental skills and techniques reinforced.

Geetesh: The workshop includes several downloads and handouts. Do tell us more about these value additions.

Rick: We promise to our patrons that everything they see across the first day – every example, every demonstration, every makeover – is available to be downloaded, opened up, dissected, reverse engineered, and learned from. Sometimes we create work on the fly and might need an extra day or two to make it available, but one way or the other, we are able to keep that promise.

As for the handout, it is important that I practice what I preach, as I believe that a good handout, apart from the slides, is key to the warding off of Death by PowerPoint. Everyone will receive a fully-formatted PDF of all the topics covered, all created in PowerPoint.
