Dinesh AwasthiDinesh Awasthi is Product Manager for authorSTREAM.com. In addition to developing the strategic product roadmap and implementation of various features on authorSTREAM, he works with the development team and keeps an eye on user feedback to formulate new releases. Dinesh holds a Masters degree in Computer Applications.

In this conversation, Dinesh discusses authorSTREAM’s Facebook app that brings new abilities to share PowerPoint presentations on Facebook.

Geetesh: Tell us more about your new Facebook app that lets users upload PowerPoint slides right from within the app.

Dinesh: Our Facebook app provides people an easy way to upload, share, and play their presentations on a Facebook timeline. Facebook users have been looking for such a feature — they have been sharing photos, messages, and videos all the while, but sharing presentations on Facebook was an extremely difficult task.

With the authorSTREAM app, it’s now possible to run PowerPoint slideshows right from your timeline. An animated presentation will play like a YouTube video on your timeline since we support animations, music, narrations, rehearsed timings, and other PowerPoint effects.

Although authorSTREAM users always had the alternative to grab the URL of a presentation and post it on their Facebook wall, there were many who wanted to share directly from Facebook. They can do that now with this app — upload presentations directly from Facebook and share them on their timeline, pages or groups.

We believe we have finally put the missing brick on the Facebook wall with this app. Users can now enjoy sharing presentations the way they enjoy sharing videos.

Geetesh: Do uploads via Facebook also sync with a user’s authorSTREAM account – also does this mean that a user needs to be an authorSTREAM member to use the Facebook features?

Dinesh: Syncing is optional. One need not be a member of authorSTREAM to upload and share PowerPoint presentations on Facebook using our app. Facebook users can continue to upload and share presentations on Facebook as long as they wish without creating an account on authorSTREAM.

However, creating an account on authorSTREAM and syncing your Facebook uploads with it has its own advantages. It will enable automatic cross posting of public presentations on Facebook and authorSTREAM. In other words, any presentation uploaded on Facebook instantly gets uploaded on authorSTREAM too and vice versa.

Besides saving upload time, your Facebook presentations are also watched on authorSTREAM generating more traffic and they also get indexed in search engines resulting in more shares and views.

Slide Master view is a very important view within PowerPoint — if you make any changes or edit within this view, these modifications will influence all slides within your presentation. For example, if you want to make your company logo appear on all the slides, you will have to add the logo within the Slide Master — or if you want the font size of your slide titles to be a little larger or smaller, then those edits also need to be made in the Slide Master.

In a previous tutorial, we showed you how you can Share PowerPoint Presentations Online using the Microsoft Office Web Viewer. That option works great if you have your own domain where you want to upload and share PowerPoint presentations (or even Word and Excel files). However, if you already use Microsoft’s SkyDrive to create and edit your presentations, then it makes sense to use a similar sharing option that is already built within the SkyDrive service.

We first explore how you can share PowerPoint slides with anyone who has an online connection, and how they can view your slides with full fidelity even if they have no PowerPoint installed, thanks to the new Microsoft Office Web Viewer. We then explore some cool VBA code that lets you remove underlines from descenders — read more to understand this well. We also look at common video and audio formats, and which versions of PowerPoint are compatible with each of these formats. PowerPoint 2013 for Windows users can learn about the new Guide options, whereas PowerPoint 2011 for Mac users will explore cool stuff you can do with videos (movie clips).

You can always use movie clips inserted in your PowerPoint slides as they are. However, to enhance their appearance and make them look more coordinated with the look of your slides, you can also apply Corrections, Recolor, Movie Styles, and Movie Borders to your inserted movies. Having said so, you are certainly not limited to the options mentioned above — PowerPoint also offers you Movie Effects, which are very similar to Shape Effects. Movie Effects let you apply various effects such as Shadow, Glow, Bevel, 3-D Rotation, Soft Edges etc. to a selected movie clip.
