Philippa Leguen de Lacroix is co-founder of Presented – a UK company who specialize in transforming PowerPoint presentations (and avoiding that whole “death by…” syndrome). The company is over 10 years old, and before that Philippa worked in Desk Top Publishing for a few investment banks for a number of years. In her spare time, she helps to run a field hockey club and coaches children to play.

He started by working at airports worldwide to set up airport databases and flight information screens. This evolved to become the basis for PresentationPoint.

I’m developing a keynote speech and agonized for a long time as to what topic I would address. In recent days, however, as I have been privileged to share and receive insights from a range of teams and individuals on public speaking, one topic has become prominent:

Fear.

We all know the feeling from a terrifying experience at some point in our lives; intriguingly, however, research suggests that three-quarters of us experience it as a direct consequence of the experience (or even proposed experience) of speaking in front of a group of people.

From many hours of reading and conversations too many to mention, I have been able to condense the observations individuals have shared into four main areas. Conveniently enough, each one begins with a letter of the word FEAR. Using the FEAR acronym, I will now present four main reasons as to why we experience this dread of public speaking and some practical tips on how to combat them.
